Neighborhoods
New York City is home to five boroughs, more than 18 million people, and dozens of neighborhoods that reflect the thriving diversity of its population. From the fashionable, art-suffused streets of Soho, to the graceful beauty of brownstone Brooklyn, to the cultural cacophony of Queens (where approximately 138 languages are spoken), New York's neighborhoods are fascinating places to see, spend time in, and cherish.
One of the best written Internet guides to the neighborhoods of New York is located on the Big Apple Greeter website. Founded in 1992, Big Apple Greeter arranges for up to six people traveling together to meet New Yorkers who will share their knowledge and love of the city with them. The service is free, the more than volunteer "greeters" speak almost 25 languages, and the organization has received an enthusiastic response from visitors who feel warmer toward New York City because of the graciousness of their volunteers.
